We're Hiring!

In January 2010, Foodspotting launched the first and leading mobile app for finding and rating dishes, not just restaurants. Today, you can use the Foodspotting website and mobile apps to find dishes recommended by spotters, friends and experts like Travel Channel, Zagat and Mario Batali.

Featured as App of the Week in both the iPhone and Android app stores, Foodspotting has received attention from The Today Show, The Wall Street Journal, Food + Wine, TechCrunch and Mashable, and was named one of Time Magazine’s 50 Best Websites of 2010 and a Top Travel Application by Travel + Leisure. Foodspotting is backed by Blue Run Ventures, Felicis Ventures, High Line Ventures, 500 Startups and a syndicate of angel investors.

Based in San Francisco, Foodspotting has built a worldwide community of foodspotters who love to find and share interesting dishes wherever they go.

We're a small team and offer the opportunity to shape a product and business model from its earliest days in a fun, flexible environment, as well as:

  • Competitive salaries and stock options
  • Company-paid healthcare, dental and vision plans
  • 4 weeks paid vacation
  • Flexible hours
  • Plenty of opportunities to eat amazing food

We're looking for people to work side-by-side with us in our industrial loft in San Francisco’s SOMA area — but if you’re an amazing fit for this role and live elsewhere at the moment, we’d still love to hear from you and can talk about relocation opportunities.

To Apply

Apply via LinkedIn or email and send links to or screenshots of applications you’ve worked on. We want to see elegant, detail-oriented code & execution — show us what you can do!

Visual UI Designer

At Foodspotting, we’ve realized that if you can articulate an idea clearly, it’s more likely to happen, making design a critical part of everything we do. You will not only help us make our website and mobile apps amazing by transforming wireframes into Apple-quality interfaces, you’ll also be responsible for coming up with and communicating ideas to the team & beyond.

Must Have:

  • You must be an interface designer, not a graphic designer: Show us that you can take a visual design concept and translate it into production-ready assets & icons for any platform: Web, multiple mobile platforms, print and even video.
  • You’re uninhibited when it comes to coming up with and expressing ideas: When you hear a problem, you can picture a dozen solutions and articulate them quickly through sketches and mockups.
  • You can show that you use visual design as a language and can explain what your design decisions are meant to communicate.
  • You can explain the rationale behind your design decisions.
  • You can translate a personality or feeling into a cohesive visual system that can be applied across all channels.
  • You love typography and can wield it well.

Bonus Points For:

You’re more than a visual designer, and your experience in any of the following would be particularly irresistible: Frontend development, crafting clever marketing campaigns, architecting interactive products and services, creating infographics or illustrations.

UX-Minded iPhone Developer / iOS Engineer

Foodspotting is the first and leading mobile app for finding and rating dishes. We're looking for a design-minded iPhone developer who is relentless about the implementation details that will make Foodspotting easiest way to stumble upon good food wherever you go.

As part of a small, agile development team, you’ll have the opportunity to shape a product and business model from its earliest days in a fun, flexible and of course food-filled environment.

Must Have:

  • Show us that you’ve built, shipped and refined high quality apps for iPhone, Android and/or other platforms.
  • You’ve created dynamic apps and know how to create a seamless conversation between client and server via RESTful APIs.
  • You have an eye for good design and know when a pixel is out of place.
  • You respect the respective human interface guidelines and put them to use, but also know how and when to extend them.
  • Your code is logical, streamlined and elegant.
  • You’ve demonstrated that you can manage finite resources well: Memory, battery life, data usage and users’ patience.

Bonus Points For:

  • You can develop for more than one platform — or aren’t afraid to try — and create apps that look and feel native to each.
  • You can create your own visual UI assets that look and feel like native controls.
  • You’re not afraid to tackle the complexities of location-based app development head on, such as working with large data sets, targeting information based on context and location, tastefully putting push notifications to use.
  • You’re attentive to metrics and user needs and can measure the impact of design decisions.
  • You can balance user requests with the bigger vision for Foodspotting.

Ruby on Rails Developer / Frontend and Backend Engineers

Foodspotting is the first and leading mobile app for finding and rating dishes. We're looking for well-rounded Rails developers who have what it takes to transform Foodspotting from a visual local guide into the "Pandora for Food."

Want to build a better recommendation algorithm? Help restaurants target foodseekers -- whether it's bacon lovers or noodle experts? Enable people to discover great things & share their discoveries via social media and other integrations? Or architect an invincible backend and JSON API to support it all?

As part of a small, agile development team, you’ll have the opportunity to shape a product and business model from its earliest days in a fun, flexible and of course food-filled environment.

Must Have:

  • Show us that you’ve built, tested, optimized and scaled Ruby (on and off Rails) applications and web services that are a delight to use in every way: Fast, straightforward, elegant and powerful.
  • You’re not afraid of RESTful JSON APIs, Google Maps API, HAML/SASS, MySQL, Memcache, DJ, Redis, Sphinx, OAuth, Git and test-driven development.
  • You’ve integrated with external services and platforms, especially Facebook, and are curious about how to put these integrations to use in clever ways.
  • You don’t have to be a frontend developer, but you should be able to see good design and pay attention to the details that make or break the user experience.
  • You acknowledge that there’s a time for everything and aren't dogmatic about any one methodology: You realize there's a time for being lean, agile and user-centered, but also a time for trusting your intuition, vision and heart.

Bonus Points For:

  • You light up when you think about one or more of the following: Game mechanics, activity streams, geotargeting, reputation and recommendations systems, complicated taxonomies, information visualization, and marketing platforms.
  • You put metrics to work for you (you're not enslaved to them): You can tell an actionable metric from a fluffy one.
  • You have experience with other languages and frameworks and have even developed for platforms like iPhone, Android, and Facebook.
