Spotted January 19, 2012Putting the app to the test with Chris Connolly and some serious bowls of ramen. -
Spotted January 19, 2012Hm! There are a few really unique ramens on the menu here. And any ramen is perfect on a drizzly night like this!-

Spotted August 19, 2011Legit ramen broth (thick and rich) though slightly light on flavor (I added soy and shichimi and it was perfect. Noodles weren't that chewy. But still, overall a good bowl of ramen.-

nomnomboris great picture :)
Alexa Andrzejewski Thanks! The place was almost completely dark to my camera's eyes, so I had Seth turn on his iPhone screen and hold it close to the noodles!
LML // Justine Lol just had a moment like that last night to take a picture of a late night salad and piadina at my fav local bar- it took 4 Phones to see a glimpse of the bread lol, and your shot is way better :-)
Alexa Andrzejewski P.S. When I took the leftover broth out of my fridge this afternoon, it had turned to a solid (well, solid on top, gel beneath). Now that's the mark of a rich bowl of ramen...

Spotted July 15, 2011The default tsukemen base is shoyu tonkotsu (pork) and is just PERFECT! The broth is thick an rich like gravy. Last time we got the special Tokyo style tsukemen on the special menu, which I had in Japan but is an acquired taste (it was full of fish powder). Amy you'd like this much more!-

Desmond Dip dip dip... you're right that broth could be really thick and salty.
Alexa Andrzejewski Yes, in fact this morning my leftover broth is a solid...

Spotted May 12, 2011Excellent and very unique #ramen -- thick, smooth gravy-like broth with dashi (#fish) powder isn't for everyone, but the thick noodles were delicious, if a little mooshy for my taste.-

Spotted April 21, 2011Rich, "milky" pork broth, thick al dente noodles. Great quality -- people wait for a reason -- but I do prefer chewier noodles, especially served on the side. -
Spotted April 17, 2011I still don't know how they make these thick, #chewy noodles, but they are amazing! The broth for dipping was flavorful, but since we had to order from a vending machine, it was unclear what kind it was, and it was quite fishy.-

Randy F. Love all the Japanese food sightings....hope the travel to that part of the world was safe and that the country is doing better.
Munchee Shepherd the sheen on those noodles makes me want them even more = )

Alexa Andrzejewski This was fine hole in the wall ramen but nothing artisan here. The noodles are handmade but kind of taste like spaghetti.
chris connolly This is one of our favorite lunch spots in the Bay Area. Spicy miso ftw!

Randy F. Woohoo!!!! Alexa, you were smart and went to both. I found Ringer Hut to be average....
Alexa Andrzejewski I really like Champon! But Santouka was absolutely fantastic as well. Want to go back for Spicy!
Randy F. If you like Champon, Izakaya Mai in San Mateo is another often mentioned place that serves it. I just like pho and ramen much better. The spicy miso isn't that spicy at Santouka and mainly has chili oil added. For spicy, Ramen Dojo (sister restaurant to Santa Ramen) is prob a better choice. :)
Randy F. Also forgot to mention: prior to Santouka opening, the next door Kahoo Ramen was considered a top ramen place. Their spicy Kotteri ramen is pretty good too and just literally next door to Santouka for your next ramen hop!

Stephanie I totally agree. Deep fried egg on top is a brilliant idea, but wasn't actually that good when I had it there. Also, why are there only 6 orders available daily?

Spotted December 05, 2009FINALLY found some ramen I can fall in love with in the Bay Area! I was SO lucky to get the last bowl of Miso Ramen tonight (they sold out around 7:30pm), because even compared to the Pork Ramen, it was *incredibly* rich, thick and amazing. No wonder people say that Santa Ramen is in a class of its own! It was as good as Ippudo in New York (as was the equally as good stewed kurobuta pork belly on the side) and the broth was as good as the ramen I had in Tokyo. I don't know if it was just that the last bowl of broth was the richest, but I'll certainly be back to see! And though you still can't beat the Tsukemen Noodles I had there, these were certainly the right chewy texture. So thankful it was as good as it was hyped up to be!

Randy F. When we add comments, do the foodspots go to the front page now? This Alpha has been great....I'm going to forward to two Yelp contacts who are huge photobugs...
Alexa Andrzejewski Hi Randy! No, it doesn't work quite like that... yours were popping to the front page because I was trying to edit the place so they're all at the same Santa Ramen, but to no avail. :-(
Randy F. I know you're a fan of Santa, Alexa.....I've heard that Santa Ramen is opening a 2nd shop in their original location. It's called Ramen Dojo and will serve a spicy ramen style only. Opening on 4/8. Prob worth checking out!

Spotted November 23, 2009Mmm -- what an interesting combo! A bitter cheese, like swiss, which melted into the mild chashu broth for chewy deliciousness. It had an odd taste to it, but the noodles were perfect. Worth running to the end of Robson for when I was staying downtown! -
-
Spotted November 14, 2009This was everything it was talked up to be! The broth is SO thick and rich, it's almost like gravy. The pork stomach (an add on) was amazing. And getting the noodles on the side is the right move -- the ones in the soup softened up too quickly for me. This was second best to the Tsukemen Ramen I had in Tokyo.

Alexa Andrzejewski Hmm -- I haven't tried enough places to make such a list yet, but you should start an open guide and we'll invite people to suggest things!
Alexa Andrzejewski For starters tho, here's a list of my high class friend Liya's favorites... it's what I used to go by in New York! BTW, I also loooved Katsu Hana... authentic tonkatsu, served just like it is in Japan -- with sesame seeds you grind on the side! Ippudo Momofuku Sam or Ko, Ive never been to Ko Robataya En - expensive but amazing! Matsugen sobaya - only sobaya in town best oysters Speaking of oysters there's the ouster bar on Carmine street Curry-ya, I haven't been and want to try Prune Baoguette Spotted pig Casa mono - expensive Sevilla - authentic Spanish been in the neighborhood forever
Alexa Andrzejewski (oops, I guess line breaks in comments don't work!)
Randy F. Thanks so much for the recs! Will definitely add Momofuku and Katsu Hana. I'll also try to make an open guide so people can share recs if I can figure out how!

Spotted November 11, 2009Katana-ya's broth is delicious -- the rich miso broth is almost milky, and cloudy with goodness. I need to remember to stop ordering the house ramen -- the version with everything on it -- because I don't like half the things. Next time, it's butter corn ramen for me! This had pork, corn, egg, fried chicken, potstickers, seaweed, and those bitter things I don't like, which I guess are shitake mushrooms, but I thought I liked those... -
-
Spotted June 13, 2009This ramen has spoiled me! The noodles are just incredible -- thick, chewy, amazing -- and the broth was spicy and tangy all at once. I cannot find anything like it in the Bay Area.

Alexa Andrzejewski The tsukemen at Minca that is NOT the "special" fish powder kind is definitely worth trying! It's a whole different animal since it's pork ramen!Tomo Murakami The BBQTomo Murakami The BBQTomo Murakami the bbq pork tsukemen is to die for. the meat is one of the most succulent piece of pork i've ever had !

Spotted October 17, 2009Mmmm! The ultimate comfort food. The noodles were delightfully chewy. Please note the pool of frothy, melted butter on the side.-
