It all started with a bacon-steakatarian girl met a vege-healthitarian boy. At first, it seemed like a recipe for disaster—the thought of never sinking her teeth into a juicy burger is almost as distressing as a post-apocalyptic zombie nightmare.
As a compromise, the boy persuades the girl to try some vegan tempeh bacon—just once—and if she hates it, will forever hold his peace. Little did she know that with one bite of the smokey and flavorful BLAT at Counter, she's hooked! So nutty, meaty, and savory—in fact, even tastier than the meat alternative.
From then on, it's a whirlwind of barbecue seitan, vegan hemp pizza, and even vegan sticky buns. New York has truly spoiled her with an easy entry to a vegan diet with a myriad of dishes that doesn't sacrifice flavor for health and compassion.
Although she hasn't been able to make a full commitment to a vegan lifestyle (still on the hunt for vegan faux-fish sushi), here are some of her favorite vegan dishes that use no meat, milk, eggs or honey.
Note: Although every single dish in this guide is plant-based (no meat, milk, eggs, or honey), some restaurants may serve animal products in their other dishes. I've tried to note whether the restaurant is 100% vegan, vegetarian, or otherwise—please let me know if any of these are wrong, or have changed.
