Mike Winston's Sightings

  • Kiss of the Dragon @ Munchie Mobile

Every individual part of this sandwich is done really well. Together the ingredients work even better. This sandwich is made of tender moist fried chicken tenders, a crispy onion ring, mashed avocado, perfectly crispy bacon, Sriracha, and sweet chili sauce (think spring roll dipping sauce) on a roll that paired perfectly. Delicious and definitely doesn't feel as heavy inside me as it sounds.

  • Cheese Fries @ Crif Dogs Ent Inc

Somehow managed to eat cheese whiz in two meals in the same day. Nice, crispy waffle fries smothered in the neon orange cheese we all know and love.

One of my favorites at Crif. A bacon-wrapped, deep-fried hot dog topped with pineapple, green onion, and teriyaki sauce.

  • Cheesesteak @ Phil's Steaks
    Spotted May 16, 2012
I'll start off by saying my time in Philly gave me high standards for cheesesteaks. Was this tasty? Yes. Authentic? Close, but no cigar. I really appreciate that they get Amoroso rolls from Philly, but something is lost in transit. It seems like the bread softens and loses its crispy exterior. The meat was moist and greasy, like it should be, but had a flavor I did not expect. It was almost like a tinge of teriyaki flavor in the meat. There was ample whiz and onions, but I'd appreciate a bit more meat in the sandwich. Finally, there's no reason it needs to cost $9. The ingredients in a cheesesteak are cheap by nature. It should consist of the cheapest cut of beef, whiz from an industrial can, and bread.

Mike Winston Marco, I know... I'm waiting for my stomach to actually tell me I'm full and it's not coming. BTW, I think $5 for a half and $8 for a full seems like better pricing with NYC price inflation taken into account.

      LUNCH
LUNCH Have you tried 99 miles to Philly? I think it might be one of the best in town, I like it better than Carl's.

Mike Winston I've been really reluctant to try cheesesteaks outside of Philly except at specifically recommended places, so I've not tried 99 Miles To Philly yet. I'll have to give it a try.

  • Valenciana Mussels @ The Mussel Pot
    Spotted May 16, 2012
A big pot of mussels in a saffron sauce with white wine, olive oil, lemon juice, and butter. There was also lots of shrimp, clams, and large slices of chorizo. I liked the flavor of this broth better, but why didn't this one come with bread to soak it up like the other pot?

Big pot of mussels with a slightly spicy tomato sauce. Tasty, but I've had better mussels.

  • Tofu Edamame Falafel Kimchi Bowl @ Kimchi Taco Truck
    Spotted May 15, 2012
Really bizarre and interesting bowl of fusion cuisine. Takes cues from Korean with the kimchi and rice, Latin with the beans, Middle Eastern and Asian with the falafel balls. I like it and I even think my favorite ingredient is the falafel balls themselves which are large, crispy and have hearty whole edamame inside.

  • Porchetta Panino @ Porchetta.Hog
    Spotted May 14, 2012
Stumbled across this newly opened little shop and I couldn't resist. All of their meats are homemade. They thin-sliced the porchetta straight from the meaty log and tossed it and the bread on a flattop grill. I added a tiny but of mayo and it was a really delicious and flavorful.
