I'm a native NYer and can't go back home without a stop at Katz's - the pastrami is just heaven on rye.

Very overrated. Langer's in Los Angeles is the Mona Lisa and this is a child's doodling. That bread is feeble. The pastrami is good but this is "not all that"

Ah, fantastic, this brings back memories. I spent New Year 2007 in New York with my then girlfriend, now wife; and Katz's was a highlight of our visit. We accidentally sat at the "Harry Met Sally" table in Katz's, and I had the pastrami sandwich on rye, freshly cut from a fantastic home-cured joint. Absolutely delicious, and next time I get to fly over from the UK, I'll be back for more!

@Tony actively disagree, the sammies at Katz's are a bucketload of noms. Never been to Langer's, but really love Katz's. Though, I do think essential eating there is the combo of corned beef and pastrami. I was nomming one down the last time I was in NYC and shared a table with an older gent. I took a bite and muttered something like 'mmmm good' and he said flatly, without looking up from his sandwich, 'best sandwich in the world.' Awesome.

The pastrami is good, but the corned beef is even better!!!

My dad and I split one of these every couple of years. I love the sign in the window "send a salami to your kid in the army".

I totally disagree. katz is mediocre at best, most people go there to spot a star or two. If you want a real pastrami go to carnegie deli or the pastrami queen (my personal fav)

I was in NYC for a day and foolishly went back to Katz'. First off it is horrible rye bread. The pastrami, its signature dish, is peppery looking and is hand-carved, the only way to do it, but there's no seasoning, there's no flavor. This is perhaps the single most overrated meal I have ever had.
If you really want amazing pastrami and truly spectacular corned rye bread, go to the one and only, Langer's Deli in LA. I have a picture posted on my page of what a real pastrami sandwich on real rye bread is meant to look like.

I'm from LA. Langers is indeed a quality pastrami sandwich but Katzs is on a different level. Carved in front of you (with free samples) thick, juicy... The bread is nothing special but who cares. Langers is no where near as epic as Katz. Second ave deli is thin sliced, good but a distant second. Carnegie is too dry, brittle. Johnnies and Phillipe's in LA are also in a lower class
