Spotted August 13, 2011they make some mean-as carrot cake too. one of the best - texturally - carrot cakes i've had in a cafe, bar none. so crumbly. -
Spotted April 16, 2011the buns we ambushed waiters and waitresses at the kitchen entrance for. okay, but not amazing enough to have been worth the effort we put into getting them. one'd almost think they didn't want our business. i must say, as a whole, i was a little underwhelmed by the place, especially after so many claims that this was THE place to get dim sum. it isn't bad, but it isn't great either.-
adaminsydney Haha! The playing-hard-to-get thing only works in posh fine-dining restaurants where they can treat you like an idiot and convince you to tip big at the same time.
meei really? i've often had decent, if not wonderful service at more pricey places - at their very worst, they just come across as being terribly snobbish (although this in itself is bad enough). and they must take people for fools if they think acting high and mighty will garner them gratuities, especially with today's prissy customers.
tamarillo Been a long time since we've been to Grand Harbour - was pretty good when it 1st opened but guess it's slipped... how does it compare with China or is there other better Yum Cha eateries in Auckland?
meei i wouldn't know - haven't been to china myself haha. i grew up with dim sum, though, so i'd like to think i know the great from the not-so. haven't been to too many yum cha places in akl, and i can't say i would be going anytime soon. i did hear from a mainland chinese acquaintance that yum cha at sun world (khyber pass, newmarket) is good, though

Spotted April 16, 2011again, okay. the pastry's a little too greasy and a little inconsistent in thickness and overall quality. -
-
Spotted April 16, 2011lai wong bao (egg yolk bun). it's oh-kay, i suppose. i've had richer, more extravagantly bodied ones before. -
-
Spotted April 16, 2011ahh the classic. we would've tried the har gao as well, but i swear, we literally stalked half the indifferent staff on duty this afternoon just to get our hands on a serve of char siu bao, so i'll be damned if we had to do it again. pretty good.-

Spotted April 16, 2011lo bak gou! they do decent enough a rendition, but i've definitely tasted better. wouldn't mind ordering it again if i was hit by a craving in the event of a second visit, though.-

Spotted February 08, 2011decent enough in terms of ratio of filling to bun (although i would always say, extra fillings never hurt anyone). the char siew is of the reddish variety and is more fatty than meaty, unfortunately. -

Spotted February 08, 2011quite like something you'd find at an asian bakery. a very faint pineapple scent. too little of the custard with a coagulated texture (that thankfully works in this context). the crackly sweet top is a fun munch. okay, i suppose, if you're into that sorta thing. -

Spotted January 31, 2011a pleasant crispness, but the crab itself doesn't quite cut it for me, esp in terms of meatiness and juiciness. -

Spotted January 26, 2011bourke st bakery-like tart shell (we-ell head baker's an alumni, so...) with a competently done custard - light and eggy. the nutmeg topping makes this tart - it's aromas, coupled with that of another spice (i'm thinking black pepper because of the spicy tinge) are warming. -
