Clockwise from top left - blackcurrant & violet, pear & ginger, sticky date, manuka honey & hazelnut, licorice & milk chocolate, bitter chocolate. personal favourites are the bitter chocolate (only perennial offering out of the six we chose) and sticky date. probably the only macarons in nz that are good enough to compete with the ones at la renaissance of the rocks, sydney (which are the best i've ever personally tried).

the now overly-hyped ma cherie macarons are just that - all hype. the insides of the shell felt too gummy to me and it wasn't particularly crisp on the outside either. certainly had better ones. flavours tried are cherry, green tea and mocha, with the intense ganache flavour of the mocha one making it our definite favourite of the three. the green tea was a little too mild, flavour-wise.

macaron shells atop a bittersweet chocolate mousse, sour cherries along the rims, and a surprise centre of a rosewater paste. actually very good as far as macarons go.

meei it's quite a wonderful mix of flavours, actually, not too sweet the way most macaron fillings can be. and it great how it's probably about the size of a human palm too; more diabetic goodness mmm.

damaged in transit. L-r: blackberry, dark chocolate, jasmine green tea and salted caramel. kudos to la renaissance for creating ganaches that actually taste like more than just sugar. the're good at it, and they know it too - so much so that they load a truckload of ganache into every macaron. notes: dark chocolate not milky, but still relatively sweet. jasmine green tea carries a distinct jasmine taste, but i'm much to disgusted by the amount of white chocolate in this thing to pass straiht judgement. salted caramel is, well, salted caramel. quite nice.

Georgia What did you think of the wasabi and black sesame?

meei quite sugary - more black sesame than wasabi. despite the lightness of the wasabi flavour, you'd definitely still be able to detect it. i thought the light lick from the wasabi complemented the sesame really well, though i would've liked it a little less sweet. but macarons were meant to be sugary anyway haha.

flavour: not too sweet, thankfully. black forest was my personal favourite. mango and white choc was good, but i don't like white chocolate, so *shrug*. the chocolate christmas pudding one tasted somewhat like chai - most sugary of the lot. texture: had lost a little of its crispness already. guess its best to find out when they get their macarons and strike while the iron's hot.

love it because the salt balances out the intense sweetness usually packed in macarons. great crispy texture with a satisfyingly gooey centre.

tastes exactly how you'd expect it to taste like - in a good way. rather sweet, like most macarons tend to be.
